Description

If the Elites in Etruscan Society formed the core of the Army, the Class III warriors formed it’s bulk. These would represent the landed peasantry who owed military service to their Lord. In the Roman Army, these troops would have been expected to arm themselves and pay for their own equipment, but there has been evidence found in mass Etruscan graves that the Lord or noble leading out his muster may have paid for and equipped his ‘line’ troops himself – in fact, some competition seems to have existed in terms of whose troops would have been best equipped.

These warriors represent the core of the Etruscan Army, the hardy farmers of the Polis ready to fulfil their military obligations. As such, they wear light armour – round Kardiophylax, Hoplon shields, greaves and more simple Hellenic or Italic helmets. Some may have fought with Thureos shields rather than Hoplon / Aspis.
