While it is thought that the Etruscans fought in a hybrid Hellenic / Italian fashion – that is, a phalanx type formation but heavily missile oriented rather than spear / hand to hand oriented, one aspect of their fighting style that may have been unique is the use of Axe-men.
It is thought that the Axe-men would have rushed forward in front of the main army, to use their heavy 2-handed axes to break up enemy formations ready for their own phalanx to then exploit these openings. If this did occur, it seems to have fallen out of favour relatively quickly. It may be that against the very mobile Gauls or more flexible Romans, such tactics had little relevance.
Whatever the truth, no Etruscan Army would be complete without some of these axe-wielding loons!
